I often find myself wanting to quickly and easily e-mail a few photos to my friends and colleagues. So, if the photos are small, I can easily attach them to my e-mail and click on the send button. But, most of the times my JPG files are at least 1 MB in size. In this case, I just follow one of my co-worker’s tip about re-sizing large photos. Here is the tip, but be aware that it only works if you have Microsoft Office installed on your machine:
- Go to Start > All Programs (or just Programs) > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
- Locate and select the picture(s) you want to re-size.
- Select Picture > Resize… On the menu bar (Or ALT + P + S). The “Resize” task bar will display on the right side of the screen.
- In the “Resize” task bar, select the “Predefined width x height:” radio button.
- Select “E-mail – Large (314 x 235 px)” from the drop-down list.
- Click OK.
- Select File > Save As and be sure to save the photo with a different name than the original if you want to preserve the original one.
Now, I can attach the scaled down picture(s) to my e-mail without worrying about hitting the e-mail server file attachment size limit.
Of course, there are many other programs and ways to re-size pictures, Picasa comes to my mind. What comes to your mind?
Now, if you do not like this attachment thing, instead, you can upload your pictures to an online photo service (like Flickr for example) and they usually re-size it for you. All what you need then in your e-mail is the URL of the photo.
