OracleCommunity.net the Social Network for Oracle People

I pre-launched OracleCommunity.net as a private, invite only social network this morning. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably got the scoop first.

Now, I’m officially launching OracleCommunity.net and making it public and available to everyone in the Oracle community. If you are an Oracle developer, DBA, customer, employee, or just interested in Oracle databases, Oracle applications and related technologies, feel free to join. There is no invite needed, however, you can always invite your friends once you become a member.

As a member, you’ll meet new people, make new friends, help and get help from fellow community members, socialize, stay up to date with the latest happenings in the Oracle community and even start your own blog.

Here are some of the features available to you as an OracleCommunity.net member, in no specific order:

  • Create your own blog.
  • Manage blog posts and moderate comments.
  • Choose the option to publish blog posts in the future.
  • Add photos, files, and widgets to blog posts.
  • Upload photos and videos from a computer or mobile phone.
  • Embed videos from any video service on the web.
  • Add photo and video comments, ratings, tags, locations, favorites, and share via email.
  • Start and tag a discussion.
  • Create public or private groups.
  • Add group descriptions, images, discussions, and members.
  • Customize the appearance of your profile page.
  • Add widgets to your profile page.
  • See which members of the community are online now.
  • Embed Photo slideshows, video players, and OracleCommunity badges anywhere on the Internet.
  • Set different privacy settings for every photo, video, group, or blog post.
  • RSS feeds are enabled for all features, such as members, discussions, photos, videos, and blog posts.
  • And much more…

Even though OracleCommunity.net is not affiliated with Oracle, I believe that it is a great addition to Oracle Mix and the Oracle Wiki.

Let’s make OracleCommunity.net grow and be a great place to hang out, have fun and learn a few things.

Most Developers are Young and Clueless About Databases and SQL

That’s what Stephane Faroult claims in the third part of his three part video series about SQL database performance best practices (shown below). Do you agree with him?

For sure, there exist young database developers whose level of expertise is still very shallow. But, isn’t that how we all started? As you grow older and learn and try new things, you gain more experience and you become less and less clueless.

So, older developers have more experience than younger ones. But, younger developers tend to be more energetic and learn new things faster. This is of course a theory and a generalization as much as it is common sense. What do you think?

Now, do you mind If I ask you this question: (more…)

Oracle Bubble News: Read, Vote and Submit Oracle Related News and Blogs

Recently, reddit added a new feature: the ability for users to create their own reddits. This new feature is currently in closed beta, but I was lucky enough to be one of the handful of users to get an invitation to play around with it (Thanks Alexis).

First, for those of you who do not know what reddit is, here is a quick introduction from their FAQ page:

reddit is a source for what’s new and popular on the web — personalized for you. We want to democratize the traditional model by giving editorial control to the people who use the site, not those who run it. Your votes train a filter, so let reddit know what you liked and disliked, because you’ll begin to be recommended links filtered to your tastes. All of the content on reddit is from users who are rewarded for good submissions (and punished for bad ones) by their peers; you decide what appears on your front page and which submissions rise to fame or fall into obscurity.

Now, take the above explanation and apply it to an Oracle specific reddit site. What you’ll get is the all new Oracle Bubble News, the reddit clone for Oracle related news and blogs. (more…)

Oracle Blogs and Blog Posts Ranked

Do you want to know which Oracle related blogs are the most linked to? Do you want to know which Oracle related blog posts are the most viewed? Just visit the following two pages on OraNA.info:

  • OraNA Technorati Ranking: I published a similar list twice before, once in May and once in July 2007. This time, the list has its permanent place on OraNA. I will update it at least once a month.

  • OraNA RSS Feed Stats: Feedburner powers the main OraNA feed. I tapped into Feedburner’s API to provide feed stats and a list of detailed feed item use and popularity. The list shows the number of views and clickthroughs for each blog post in the last 24 hours. This list is automatically updated every day at 5:00 AM PST.

Have fun!

iPhone and iPod Touch Version of OraNA.info

Last Sunday the geek in me wanted to learn something new. So, I went ahead and got started with iPhone development. I wanted to build something simple yet useful. I started at 4:30 PM and by around 8:15 PM an iPhone optimized version of OraNA.info was born.

The following is a short video demonstration of OraNA on my iPhone, which should also work on the iPod touch:

To browse OraNA on your iPhone, visit oradot.com/i/orana/.

Quick tip: If you want to always browse a specific category, you can bookmark the category page.

This is just the beginning. I have a few ideas for more iPhone goodness. I just need to learn some advanced techniques and of course find the time to do it.

I am a Spammer and so Are You if You Played The Tag Game

There is at least one person who is not happy with Jake’s old-fashioned game of blog tag. Howard Rogers has shut down his website in protest against this latest blog tag craze. Right now, it’s a madhouse I want no part of, Howard writes on his, now one page, site. He also expressed his frustration about flooding OraNA with 8 things you didn’t know about me posts here, here, here and here.

Personally, I think it is not spam, or at least it is not bad spam. The tagged posts show that there is a real person behind every Oracle blog, each with a different personal story to tell. However, OraNA is indeed flooded with the 8 things posts, so I do understand Howard’s frustration, even though his reaction was a bit extreme.

Do you think that the time has come to stop tagging?

8 Things You May Not Know About This Blogger

Jake Kuramoto has tagged me to write eight things about myself in an effort to “learn more about the people you interact with using New Web”. Without further ado, here I am personally telling you 8 secrets about my personal life:

Now, the next tagged victims are: Tom Kyte, Doug Burns, Mark Rittman, Ameed Taylor, Alex Gorbachev, Laurent Schneider, Pawe? Barut, and Steve Karam.
