Oracle OpenWorld 2006 – Monday Oct 23 – Videos, Photos and a Segway

Here is, in summary, what Oracle Develop at Hilton San Francisco and the Oracle DEMOgrounds looked like today:

After Steven Feuerstein’s session – 10 things you should never do with PL/SQL – Andrew Clarke and I went for a walk around the Moscone center and the exhibition halls:

Check out the new photos at the Oracle OpenWorld Flickr Group.

I was lucky enough to win a ride on a Segway. Actually, I made a deal with the salesperson: I attend your 10 minute product demo, you let me “drive” the Segway:

A special thanks to Andrew who captured these historical moments :)

Oracle OpenWorld 2006 – Registration and Oramag Dinner (Video + Photos)

Before heading to the appreciation dinner hosted by Oracle Magazine, I went to register for Oracle OpenWorld. The “full conference” registration lines were long but I managed to blend in with the “Alumni” registration line which was a lot shorter. Still, it took them quite a bit of time to find my registration record and issue “the badge”. During my wait for “the badge”, I managed to shoot this short clip:

After the registration I headed to the E&O trading Co, a few blocks away, to attend the Oracle magazine editors’ choice award winners appreciation dinner. It was fun and exciting to meet many of the Oracle Gurus in person. Here are a couple of pictures:

Oracle OpenWorld 2006 – The Arrival (Video)

I’m in San Francisco now. Here is a short video about my short trip from Portland. I’m planning on posting a few more Oracle OpenWorld videos during the next few days (in other words, I’ll be video blogging).

Oracle OpenWorld 2006 Flickr Group

Similar to last year’s group, I have created the Oracle OpenWorld 2006 Flickr group. It is a central repository of OOW06 photos.

How do you share photos with the OOW06 group? Easy! If you belong to the group, just add your photo to the group pool (if not, join the group first). The easiest way to add a photo to the group is to go to your photo’s page, and click on the “Send to Group” button that you should see between the photo title and the photo itself. Click that, then choose the group “Oracle OpenWorld – 2006″ and you’re done! You can also send a batch of photos to the group from your Flickr’s Organize page.

Note: If you do not have a Flickr account, you can easily sign up for a free account at flickr.com/signup.

Oracle OpenWorld News Aggregator

Using Google News Search and Technorati Blog Search in addition to some Google Reader and Feedburner magic, I have put together a web page that aggregates and displays Oracle OpenWorld related blogs and news sources.

So, if you want to stay up-to-date on the latest from Oracle OpenWorld, head on to the Oracle OpenWorld News Aggregator or subscribe to this feed in your favorite feed reader.

On a similar note, you may also want to take a look at OraNA, the largest Oracle blog and news aggregator on the Net.

A Complimentary Oracle OpenWorld Session

If you have registered for only the Oracle Develop Track of Oracle OpenWorld 2006, you may be eligible to receive access to one OpenWorld session. Yesterday, I received the following email from the OpenWorld registration team:

Dear Edward Awad,

As part of your registration package for Oracle OpenWorld, you receive access to one OpenWorld session. Due to overwhelming demand, we advise all attendees to reserve space in the session of their choice for priority seating before arrival at Oracle OpenWorld. Please log-in to the Schedule Builder tool to choose the sessions you want to attend. To guarantee a seat in your session, you need to register for the session and arrive 10 minutes before the session begins.

Your OpenWorld registration package also gives you unlimited access to the following:

OpenWorld Keynotes
Concurrent Keynotes
Partner Perspectives
2 Exhibition Halls
OpenWorld Connect

We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

OpenWorld Registration Team

So, I have chosen to register for the following session:

  • Oct-25 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM – S281244 – Recent Enhancements in Oracle’s Cost-Based Optimizer – Jonathan Lewis.

I have also added the following to my list of registered Oracle Develop sessions:

  • Oct-23 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM – S281376 – The Next Application Platform – Thomas Kurian.
  • Oct-24 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM – S285130 – Things you think you know – Thomas Kyte.

Now, all what I need to do is to arrive 10 minutes before the sessions begin.

OK, I Will be There Too

I’m late, but as the saying goes, better late than never. I just signed up for Oracle OpenWorld 2006 and purchased the airline ticket last Friday. I will be attending only the Oracle Develop part of it though. I will be flying from PDX to SFO on October 22nd and flying back on the 25th.

I booked the hotel through the Oracle OpenWorld registration. However, Sue was right when she said back in August: “if you’ve not booked your hotel for Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco yet, you’re probably not going to get your first choice”. Indeed, I did not get my first choice. I preferred a hotel closer to the event location (Hilton San Francisco and Moscone Center). Instead, I will be staying in the Hilton Garden Inn, which is fine except that it is 12 miles (~ 19 km) away from downtown San Francisco. Fortunately, Oracle provides complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and Moscone Center.

In addition to the “expert-led, in-depth technical sessions, hands-on labs, advanced how-tos, and detailed tutorials” offered by the Oracle Develop program, I am looking forward to attending the second annual OpenWorld blogger meetup, organized by Mark Rittman. I did not attend last year’s gathering, so, I am looking forward to meeting the people behind the many excellent Oracle blogs.

Here are some of the sessions I’m planning to attend:

  • Web Services Development, Deployment, Security, and Testing Made Easy with Oracle JDeveloper
  • Administration and Deployment of Oracle BPEL Process Manager (for Beginners)
  • 10 Reasons to Choose Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle Application Development Framework Faces: A Real Project Perspective
  • 10 Things You Should NEVER Do in PL/SQL
  • Secure SQL Coding: How to Avoid SQL Injection Attacks
  • PL/SQL Performance: Debunking the Myths
  • Advanced BPEL
  • Oracle JDeveloper Treasure Hunt: The Hidden Oracle JDeveloper Gems

Hope to see you there!

Oracle Opens Registration for OpenWorld San Francisco 2006

Quoting from this Oracle press release:

Oracle today opened registration for Oracle OpenWorld(r) San Francisco 2006, to be held October 22-26 at Moscone Center. Additionally, attendees will also be able to register for a new program launching this year for developers, Oracle Develop. Oracle Develop will help attendees advance their development skills and expand their knowledge at expert-led, in-depth technical sessions, hands-on labs, advanced how-tos, and detailed tutorials. The event is expected to be Oracle’s largest to date, with over 41,000 participants.

How much does it cost to attend and how can I register? Answer.

Time flies quickly. Remember last year’s OpenWorld? I hope I can attend this year’s conference.
